The Tea-cup Cottage: Disability Support Services

About Us

Founded by Alexandra Shaw in 2010, Tea-cup Cottage started as a way for Alex to have choice and control over the disability support services provided to her own family.

After Alex’s husband, David, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND), their whole family’s lives were changed and their priorities quickly shifted to finding the best supports possible.

Understanding David’s needs better than anyone else, Alex decided to step into the role of his primary carer and began training staff on how to best care for and communicate with David.

Alex hired a small team of caring, experienced staff who understood David’s needs and were able to provide the best quality care and support from within their family home. Alex’s main focus was always on maintaining David’s ability to make choices about his family and his care. With more control over the supports being delivered, David was able to maintain that important role in his family.

After watching the success of David’s care program, Alex shifted her attention to developing a respite retreat for children with a disability called Cubby House. With a background in architectural design, Alex knew there was a need for this specialist type of disability service.

More than 10 years later, Tea-cup Cottage is now a full provider of disability support services offering a wide range of supports including Short Term Accommodation, day programs, supported social events and holidays, and specialist disability accommodation.
