The Tea-cup Cottage: Disability Support Services

The Bean

Designed specifically for young adults and children with high care needs, physical disabilities and fragile conditions, The Bean is well-equipped for a fun respite stay.

Named after the home’s previous owner who ran a local coffee shop, The Bean has kept hints of its history with café artwork on the walls. You can almost smell the freshly roasted coffee!

Located on a quarter acre block in the Brisbane bayside suburb of Capalaba, guests at The Bean can enjoy the wide variety of games and activities available.

With space to accommodate up to four guests at a time, The Bean is suitable for guests up to 18 years of age to explore, play, grow and learn while also experiencing a relaxing break from everyday life.

Wheelchair-friendly both inside and out, guests of all abilities can enjoy the beautiful green open space and visits to see the friendly donkeys next door.

The Bean offers short to medium term respite and emergency accommodation.

The Bean respite care facilities

Every space both inside and outside The Bean is wheelchair-friendly so everyone can enjoy the large open areas and green space.

The sensory room is fun place for all, especially guests with ADHD, sensory integration disorder and autism who can really engage with the ‘touch and see’ experiences.

Our guests love getting involved with the music therapy sessions and sometimes even get to visit our friends at Cubby House in Birkdale for a fun Saturday morning out.

For guests with high care needs, The Bean is equipped with specialist equipment and hospital style beds. Our team is also highly trained with relevant clinical experience to support guests who may have cerebral palsy, vision impairment, physical conditions or need respiratory support.

The Tea-cup Cottage wheelchair-friendly van often takes guests out for trips to the all abilities playground at Capalaba where they can play in the sand pit, explore the musical forest, climb and swing on the wheelchair-accessible Liberty Swing.

The van also takes guests on outings within the local area to get involved in activities happening around the community, which is great for building independence.

Back at The Bean, some of the activities our staff put on every day include cooking and baking in the kitchen, arts and crafts and other capacity building tasks.

About The Bean respite care

Respite care at The Bean is like a home away from home for young adults and children with disability. It also provides time for carers to take a break from their duties while knowing their loved one is safe and sound. By providing a supportive and comfortable space for young adults with disability to relax, they have the chance to develop their independence, learn new skills and make friends along the way.

Uniquely designed to cater for a range of disabilities including autism (ASD), intellectual disability, mental health, physical disability and complex needs, our respite care locations are Disability Approved for both respite and emergency respite and operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Our qualified and friendly staff are there fulltime to provide support with daily routines, organise activities and help develop new skills. Depending on the length of your stay, we can even arrange to go out to local recreational and social events like the movies, lunch or playgrounds.

The lengths of respite stays at The Bean can vary anywhere between one night to two weeks or more.
