What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is all about supporting people with disability to live as independently as possible within their chosen home.

Often delivered to people with disability living within shared accommodation, independent living support services are designed to help adults and young people with disability build their living skills.

Depending on the level of support you require, funds to access independent supported living services may be included as part of your NDIS plan. The NDIS determines what funding you require based on what is deemed reasonable and necessary.

There are three levels of SIL funding, each depending on the level of support required and the participants care needs. The three levels are:

  • Lower needs – This low level of support is usually not provided 24/7 and includes regular supervision of living arrangements.
  • Standard needs – This level of support is available 24/7 and includes overnight support and the supervision of most day-to-day tasks.
  • Higher needs – This is the highest level of SIL available and includes continual active support with day and night activities. This level is often only required by those with high medical needs or complex behavioural disabilities.

Independent living support services

Tea-cup Cottage can help to provide support with day-to-day activities in your own home and within the community to help you live an independent life and achieve your goals.

Our flexible team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to support you to build your independence and develop your skills in areas such as:

  • Shopping for groceries and preparing food
  • Cleaning your home
  • Taking public transport to and from community activities, appointments, school and work
  • Managing of your medication
  • Budgeting and money management
  • Improving social skills and relationship building

Supports that are not included as part of Supported Independent Living (SIL) include money for rent, day-to-day living expenses, groceries, community activities, transport and household bills.

For people with severe functional impairment or highly complex support needs, the NDIS may provide additional funding to access Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA).

This type of accommodation is specially designed for people with complex disabilities to receive supports with daily activities. SIL supports may be delivered to participants living in SDA.
